What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is the thickening and inflammation of the plantar fascia. This is the tissue that runs along the sole of your foot, it connects at the heel and the ball of the foot. There can be many contributing factors to developing plantar fasciitis. It can be very painful and can affect your ability to walk.

Treatment

  • Orthotics
  • Rest
  • Immobilisation
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Icing to reduce inflammation
  • Night splints
  • Stretching and exercising the foot
  • No walking bare foot
  • Wearing shoes with shock absorption

Causes

Common causes:

  • Sudden increase of exercise intensity
  •  A tight Achilles tendon
  • Have flat feet or a high arch
  • Are on your feet for the majority of the day
  • Are overweight or obese
  • Constant change between heeled and flat shoes

Symptoms

  • Pain on the sole of the foot
  • Pain on the bottom of the heel
  • Affected ability to walk
  • Worse pain in the morning
  • Pain when putting pressure or weight on the affected foot
